The complex in Frýdlant is interesting by harmonious unification of two architectural objects – a medieval castle and a Renaissance chateau. The castle was built in the 13th century on a strategic place in order to protect the crossroad of trade routes. Its oldest part is so called Old Castle or Upper Castle with nearly fifty metres high tower, which served as an orientation point or a lighthouse and has preserved up to these days. The recent exposition includes this oldest castle museum, orientated towards the Thirty Years War and the personage of Albrecht of Valdstein, further more the chapel with precious movables and two chateau wings. Besides furniture, chateau equipment, glass and chine the exposition includes the collection of weapons and a unique collection of pipes. The authority office room, the children’s room with valuable toys from the late 19th century, the bathroom and the kitchen with the original equipment are accessible. In the chateau picture-gallery are exposed works by Czech Baroque masters, such as Karel Škréta, Petr Brandl and Václav Vavřinec Rainer.
