The Powder Tower serves as a monumental gateway to the Old Town and is one of the symbols of Prague. It was begun in 1475 and was later given a neo-Gothic makeover. The name of the tower dates from the 18th century when it served as a store for gunpowder. The Powder Tower is 65m high, and a 186-step spiral staircase leads up to the viewing platform 44m above the ground. The tower marks the beginning of the Royal Way.
